I’ve collected steins over the past 40 years, since I was stationed in Germany. I don’t know terribly much about them, however. I still come by interesting ones and bring them home. I have one that was unmarked and I was able to identify as made by S. P. Gerz, nicely made probably late 1800’s. There is the pewter lid with a name engraved in it. My question is this: Did they keep steins at the gasthauses for when regulars would come in and have their stein taken down and filled? The name is of a fairly well known painter, and I’m trying to figure out if this was his personal stein, or perhaps just a coincidence? Any help would be appreciated!
