    Hi,

My mother cleaned up the attic and we found this beer stein (see picture). I have extremely little knowledge about them and I stumbled on your website when I googled the sentence that is on the stein “Immer wirb das glück ist mürb”. There is a stein on the site of which the figures are strikingly similar to that of mine. The pose of the woman and the man, a lot of the folds in their clothes, the little child on the left side of the woman.

So I am wondering if this gives an indication that it was created by the same person or in the same work shop ?

There is also a marking on the bottom and a number (which I assume indicates the production number):

My parents comes from close to the German border so I am pretty sure that it was bought at some time in Germany. Either by them or their parents.

I would really appreciate it if someon has more info on this stein.

    Thank you very much.

    Best regards,

    Roel

    Roel,

The mark on your stein is that of Simon Peter Gerz. It does not appear in any of the on-line catalogs. Since the same scene was used by other manufacturers, it is probably based on a painting.

      Hi Ron,

thank you very much for your information. That’s very usefull. Do you know if there is any way to determine the age of the stein?

      Best regards,

      Roel,

Villeroy & Boch’s Mettlach factory was about the only one that marked the year of production. The Golden Age of steins was around the turn of the 20th Century. The Great War (WWI) in 1915 cut off trade with Germany. After the war, the monarchy fell and there was high inflation which resulted in a reduction in stein output. About the best you can do on age is say circa 1900.
