Chris, It's the mark of the "Dürerbund/Werkbund", a combination of the Dürer Society and the German Work Federation. (Information on both can be readily found on the Internet.) The combination began providing Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) designs to Merkelbach at some point after joining forces in 1914. For what it's worth, base marks for several individual artists from the period can also be found on Merkelbach wares, including Richard Riemerschmid, Paul Wynand, et al. These can also be useful for manufacturer identification.
