I have the identical stein. Is yours also dated 09-12? I also have a standard 1 l naval S.M.S. Gneisenau labeled Matrosen-Division (Wilhelmshaven) 06-09 and a 0.5 l double ship 05-08 S.M.S. Gneisenau/ SMS Friedrich Carl. The latter was decommissioned in March 1908 and I imagine transfer to the S.M.S. Gneisenau indicated the owner had special ability to be sent to the elite far eastern fleet.
