Martyn,I checked Steinmarks but could not find it,since this stein predates 1871 I think that the peweters mark is or was known by his mark(the bavarian shield)and a set of numbers around his mark, but this is just a thought. The handle is set high near the rim and is smaller than others.John Mcgregor states that westerwald steins can be divided into 2 areas-smaller handle 1835-1865 which lines up with your dates and the larger handle 1865-1885.Also during the 1835-1865, production and quanities were low which also lines up with what you stated. There is a hole in front of the shank(what little there is)so there is a support strap in back of the shank and 1 in front of the shank with a small nipple to fit into the hole, along with the lines on the bottom, where a wire was pulled through it all point to an early date which you all ready said. This stein has a new home in my large collection of steins.I want to thank you very much for your help.David
