Randy, one way you might tell if the original lid was pottery or pewter is an inspection of the pewter shank where it once met the lid. If it includes a small round or block protrusion where it could have held the pottery, that’s a pretty good indication. If it’s flat it might have held a pewter lid, but that wouldn’t be a definite proof. One common reason for Girmscheid broken lids are the fragility of the ceramic-to-ceramic meeting, so yours likely was. The Beer Stein Library shows your stein in sizes .5-, 1.5- and 2-liters—all with figural pottery lids. I can’t guess on the cost or likelihood of replacing the proper pottery lid. I believe it might even be higher that the value of the stein, but maybe someone could give you a better idea. I don’t think that putting a pewter lid on it would ruin it.
