Ken Stroud, In regards to your November 2010 Show and Tell article, your other two stag steins were made by Reinhold Hanke. The first is 1274, not 1774. The following is from The Beer Stein Library for 1274, described as Hunting Symbols: “Frischer Trunk labt’s Jägerblut, thut auch andern Leuten gut.” (A drink refreshes a hunter’s blood, and it also does good for other people.) The central image on this stein depicts the kneeling figure of St. Hubert, patron saint of hunters among French and German-speaking peoples of Europe, at the moment of his epiphany. The Beer Stein Library says this about 1525, which is described as Forest Scene: “Im Wald und auf der Heide, da such ich meine Freude.” (In the forest and the meadow, there I seek my pleasure.) The text on this stein is from a poem (“Im Wald und auf der Heide”) written by Wilhelm Bornemann in 1816 and set to music in 1827 by F. L. Gehrike. The initials “RD” stand for Rudy Dekker. Ron
