Joe, I just discovered that you posted your question here, as well as sending me an email directly, so I thought it couldn't hurt to post the answer I sent to you in case anyone else is curious about your boot. — "Your boot was first produced by the firm of Marzi & Remy circa 1890. Note, however, that it was common practice for M&R (and others) to continue to manufacture successful products for years after their introduction, so there's no way to be certain as to when your example actually left the factory. The text reads: "Stiefel du mußt sterben." (Boot you must die.), an apparent reference to the content as opposed to the container."
