Laura, The Beer Stein Library of the Thewalt catalog does not list mold 183. I am not sure what size your stein is or what other models you were comparing it to. While your stein may be the approximate age of the Mettlach you mention, that alone does not determine the value. The type of stein (Mettlach 1932 is etched and Thewalt 183 is relief, size (Mettlach 1932 comes in the 1 L and 0,5 L size), condition (mint, damaged, repaired, etc.) and desireability of the particular stein to a collector along with the number of collectors collecting that type of stein are other factors to be considered. I think your Mettlach prices may be out of date. In mint condition the 1 L version is in the $300 to $400 range and the smaller version is in the $200 to $300 range per The Beer Stein Library. Auction prices include the dealer profit, so the seller realizes about 30-35% less. Per The Beer Stein Library, the German verse is "O’ schöne Zeit, o’ Zeit der Liebe.” (Oh beautiful time, oh time of love.) The second O' on your stein substitutes "du" which translates to you. Text is from a song written by German composer Carl Götze (1837-1887). Several other manufacturers have steins with similar scenes (Diesinger #5, 1.5 L; Girmscheid #1038, 2 L; Rosskopf und Gerz #302, 0,5 L and Albert Jacob Thewalt #250, 4 L etched version. If you can provide more information on the size of your stein and what you are comparing it to we might be able to help you further. Ron
