Larry, Both of your steins are relief type. This is the most common type of stein found and generally was targeted for the souvenir trade. While the one stein has a figurine on the lid, this does not make it a character stein. A character stein is shaped to look like a person, animal, thing, etc. See the Character Steins site in the Licks section. While the one mark dates from 1930, the Original Thewalt probably dates it from the 1970s or 1980s. The second stein says Western Germany thus dating it from May 1949 to October 1990. Neither the original or reproduction of these molds appears in The Beer Stein Library's Thewalt catalog. You might want to send them photos.
