Linda, The first line appears on Marzi & Remy 1621. Per The Beer Stein Library it is: “Es ritten drei Reiter zum Thore hinaus.” (Three knights rode out of the gate.) The text is the first line of an 18th century German folk song entitled “Drei Ritter am Thor” (Three Knights at the Gate); author unknown.. You will have to show a photo of the stein and mark to help date it. Ron
