David, the majority of steins made by most stoneware companies of the region and period had pewter lids put on them. JW Remy was no exception. Today you will find many examples of steins that have no lids. Pewter is a soft metal and is easily broken off. It is also believed many lids were removed during war years to assist the war effort.
