Upon doing a little more deciphering on the same stein I was asking about possible restoration work, it says at the top 1897 Fahnenschmied Martensen 1900, then below that 3. Escadr. It does not say the particular regiment and there are no other soldiers listed by the handle. There is a banner below that may have listed a regiment, but it is worn and illegible. It turns out a Fahnenschmeid is a farrier, or kind of a blacksmith/veterinarian who cares for the (in this case cavalry) horses hooves and legs and also shoes them. I would presume there may be only one per regiment or possibly less. The Kirsner book does not list this in the military glossary section of regimental steins. Does anyone know more about Fahnenschmied's and to how many regiments would one be assigned? I would presume they would not be involved in any fighting and may almost be like a contracted civilian?
