Ken, There was one Fahnenschmied per cavalty squadron, machine gun company or Abteilung, field or foot artillery battery, train company and the radio companies in Telegraphen Batls. There were also other units authorized Fahnenschmeied. The authorized rank was Unteroffizier and they were generally shorter men to enable them to more easily work under the horse. Many of them had been blacksmiths and/or horse shoers in civilian life. John
