Bill, thanks for your reply. Before I left a comment here I scoured eBay and internet sites and the trouble I was having was since I knew nothing about steins, it was hard determing what words to search on ("vintage" vs. "authentic") and the age of the stuff I was finding online. Everything I saw on eBay were either modern reproductions or of unclear age or authenticity (some of the reproductions were selling much more than $20-- but that's eBay). I may be less than a novice on steins, but I do know that provenance can be everything-- items that have little or no intrinsic value can be worth a small fortune depending on its history or previous ownership. As I mentioned in my earlier post, this stein's history is adequately documented and I could point to a number of online and printed soures detailing my father-in-law's place in WWII and the Korean war. He was awarded five Battle Stars, a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, the French Croix de Guerre, the U.N. Service Medal, New Jersey Medal of Honor, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. If the general said he swiped this stein from the Hofbrauhaus in 1939-- that's were it came from. The next travel stop for this stein will be to my children.
