Ron, that is pretty cool to find the stein with the original invoice still inside it. Is yours the featured stein for the Mar 2004 stein collectors article. When I was searching for old HB steins I came across your article. It is a nice stein and the article was well written. I would love to come across an old HB stein with the original bill of sale. That is pretty neat. Any idea when they started painting on the HB and crown. With yours being 1898 it must be before turn of the century. I have seen a couple of HB steins with an HB and no crown on the stein and the KGL lid and one with the HB no crown and an HB no crown on lid. They are not roughly carved into the stein like the 2 old ones I have, but are more neatly done and the HB is done in blue. They could likely be the ones made just prior to the painted HB with crown like you have. I am just trying figure out a timeline for them. I have looked for the book you mentioned but have had no luck finding one for a decent price. I checked out the mugmeister.com site. That is a really nice old HB stein that he has. Thanks for the link. I appreciate you taking the time to help me gather info about the HB steins.
