It is known that K/Carl Mehlem was born in 1885, so I guess he would not have been given credence as a designer by R. Merkelbach until he was 20 or so. The source of my dating of that Merkelbach mark was one of the owners of the Merkelbach company during the latter half of the 20th century. Whilst I have seen items by Mehlem supposedly dated after WW1 on sale, I believe Ron's conclusions of 1910 - 1916 are correct. I might add that if you assume that mould numbers are in consecutive order (not always) then it would be nearer 1910 than 1916. As for the C's vs K's, generally both people's and place names generally migrated from C to K. However there was no firm rule as to people's personal preferences.
