Gordon, Getting back to your original question, consider the following facts: 1. The stein weighs 46 pounds empty. 2. Water weighs 8.35 pounds per gallon. The stein holds 32 liters or about 8.5 gallons. While beer tastes heavier than water I have seen statements that say it weighs less, but not significant enough for our discussion. So filling the stein will add about 71 pounds to the weight. 3. The German verse translates to "He who can empty this stein is truly a man." For us lesser men out there, a 15 liter version of the stein is available. 3. One of the stein references I provided does reside in a restaurant, which I presume does serve beer even if it doesn't have a bar. 4. Another German restaurant that was located in Pheonix closed and they tried to sell their stein on eBay several years ago for $5,000. This stein with a heavy ornate pewter lid attached to the stein and a pewter base is in a current stein auction with an estimated price range of $1,000 to $1,500. The pewter is not normal and may have been added after manufacture. For most of us stein collectors the price would expend the funds we have available to collect steins and the size would consume the space we have available to display them. Add up all these facts and I think you will have your answer. Ron
