Jeff. The auction is run by a Master Steinologist, so I trust his judgement if he says they are Mettlach inserts in the pewter base. As I previously stated, I think the pewter was added after market. That would then make it a semi-customed stein. Due to its size, the ceramic lids for these steins were never attaced to the body. Ron Ron
