Adrian, Your stein has the Mercury mark, which can sometimes be dated by the scallops and dots at the bottom. Your stein appears to have been made in 1884. The Print Under Glaze (PUG) steins could have a number of different designs on them. Mettlach would stamp a design number (usually three to four digits) on the bottom of the stein. This number is used to identify the design rather than the form number, which is a blank stein. Since you don't appear to have a design number, I'm guessing that the design may have been added by a non-Mettlach decorator. If you go to the Reading Room/Library section of this site you will see various articles on translations and help in reading German script. The verse isn't the usual German verse found on steins, so you will need someone to translate it for you. One article offers translations if you send a photo of the stein and the verse to the WebMaster. Ron
