I have owned a 0.5L 2002 Mettlach for about 30 years and have aways wondered if a particular defect in the stein most probably originated from the factory or subsequent damage. From those of you familiar with Mettlach factory defects and repair I would be very grateful for your opinion and comments.
The defect in question is a rather rough area near the lip of the sten that appears to have the same exact color (matte blue) as the rest of the stein but which differs in texture. In the area in question the surface is some what uneven ("lumpy"), has a few small cracks and has a fine texture that may suggest some brush marks (but not definitive). In this area in question it is possible that the initials "SM" are present (but it is hard to tell if these are intentional or just part of a random pattern. There are no hailines, etc. on the inside of the stein.
On some parts of the rim in this area, the blue extends very slightly onto the rim. It is not possible to tell if there is glaze over this blue or not.
I would be tempted to conclude that has been non-factory repair but the color appears to be perfect and there are obvious factory firing cracks on the stein in some other areas.
Did the factory ever "touch up" defects prior to sae?
Thank you for your opinions!
Best regards,
John
