Chris, There is no way to exactly date steins except for Mettlachs which have the date of manufacture included in the base markings. If you can recognize pewter styles and workmanship then that can in most cases be used to approximate a date. "Germany" or 'Made in Germany" was used after 1887 and again since 1980. Western Germany was used 1949 to 1980, but only steins that were to be exported were required to be so marked. So no mark at all is of no help whatsoever in dating the piece. Generally blue and grey stoneware is earlier than ivory stoneware. Ivory stoneware came into vogue in the late 1880s, not before. So generally dating a stein is all that is available in most cases.
