Bill — The point I was trying to make in my email to you yesterday was that "most handle STYLES can be found on the products of multiple Westerwald manufacturers, so the match with a known handle has to be pretty EXACT for use in identifying the origin of a stein." That was not the case with your #364 and the M&R #1837 in your earlier posting.

With respect to John's identification of #364 as a Girmscheid product based on the configuration of the capacity mark, in my personal view, there are agruments that could be made both for and against that conclusion. For instance, while the overall style is not unlike some other Girmscheid steins from that period, it would be the only known instance of that particular style of body banding.

With all due respect to John, and with full acknowledgement of the fact that capacity marks can be a valuable tool in beer stein identification, I'm a long way from being convinced that it's an infallible origin indicator, at least given the current state of the art. — fjl
