Pewter is not made of lead. It is made of tin (90%+)and either antimony or copper. Usually antimony as copper tend to darken very quickly. The Europeans have been aware of the dangers of lead for a very long time and it has been illegal to use it in pewter since the early 19th century, or even earlier. I have some steins made ca.1800 that have lids so bright and shiny they look brand new and that is because they have a VERY high percentage of tin mixed with a small amount of antimony to reduce the brittleness of the tin and nothing else. Any beer stein you are likely to buy is certainly safe to drink from.
