Two factors which definitely contributed to this price are the figure of the fox and the age. Most designs on student steins simply feature the Wappen, or coat of arms. On earlier pieces you occasionally find a knight holding a flag with the society colors, and these are also pricey. The fox, of course, has special meaning as the initiates were termed "Fuchs" before they were fully qualified members of the society. I'm not aware of any special significance of this society, Hannovera Göttingen, nor of the individuals named in the inscription, but they may be significant, if not of general significance then perhaps to these particular bidders.

One last point. There were only a two bidders who competed to the bitter end for this piece. "thomas1942" is a frequent buyer of studentica, and a determined one. He generally only has to bid once, and his proxy bids are rarely outbid. The point is that if two people care passionately about anything, and if they have the resources to spend, they can create a selling price which is far in excess of what anyone else will pay. The term "market value" really doesn't apply in the usual sense, because these two (or any small group) essentially comprise their own market place.
