This is just a note to clarify past research leading to the connection between the subject mark and the Girmschied factory in the article on Girmscheid in the Beer Stein Library, which by the way, echos the call on that mark in the publication entitled "Beer Stein Marks" issued by SCI as a "Supplement to Prosit."

To the best of my knowledge, the first (and perhaps only) evidence connecting the mark to Girmscheid was an article by Ray Hanson in the March 1986 Prosit at page 1445, which noted the mark on a stein that was also signed "KB". It was presumed by Mr. Hanson at the time that the modeler "KB" (Kilian Beuler) had worked exclusively for Girmscheid. Although we now know that the "KB" initials also appear (albiet infrequently) on steins made by S.P. Gerz, Thewalt, Rosskopf & Gerz, and perhaps others, the connection between the subject mark and Girmscheid has been largely unquestioned since the Hanson article in 1986.

I should also note that I visited the Girmscheid factory a couple of years ago in hopes of gaining some insight into Girmscheid history. The young couple that is currently running the factory (their name escapes me), had absolutely no access to historical information and seemingly little interest in the subject. That being the case, I wouldn't give too much weight to their inability to "confirm" the mark, one way or the other.

In any event, it would appear that the time may have come for a reevaluation of prior conclusions.
