Hello: I have an old family heirloom stein that I got from my grandfather. I will describe it so maybe someone can tell me more about it and maybe it's worth....

On bottom stamped "Made in Germany" in metallic type with a handwritten (in glaze) number "2".

This appears to be from 1919 and may be a stein given to each soldier in an infantry unit. the number "19" is large on the side of the stein in red with a white/blue field behind it on the diagonal. Ringed with a wreath fo two kinds of leaves...oak leaves lighter green on the left...plain darker leaves on teh right. A gold banner wraps in and out of the wreath and around the rest of the picture. The words on the gold banner are "Erinnerung Dien Ftzeit (sp?) an meine....Infanterie Strammes Corps, thut sich allenandern vor....Steh ich in finstrer Mitternacht So einsam auf der stillen Wacht...Die Schonste aller Waffen ist doch die Infanterie!...Bruder, stosst die Alaferan es lebe der Refervemann" Each of the wording between the elipses are on different segments of teh gold banner that is interwoven between 4 pictures of soldier doing the job. The first picture on the top left is soldiers doing drills with blue unforms, and blue hats...the next image bottom left is a guard standing with rifle at guard shack with a Hessian pointed helmet in Winter snow with a cresent moon in the sky...the third image is on the top right showing soldiers in blue uniforms and Hessian helmets with rifles w/bayonets with another soldier in the backgroun with a sabre; whle 3 soldiers lay on the ground with rifles...the final picture is 4 soldeirs drinking beer with a woman wearing a waitress bodice in a beer hall making a toast seated at a round wooden table. Below the middle wreath with the number "19" is a cityscape...yellow homes with read roofs and a gray city scape behind with church towers. Below this on the base is the name of possibly the owner of the stein "Schutze Lambert". The banding around the Frieze band and base is metallic gold with red/brick. Above the Frieze band is more writing in black: "19. bayr. Inf. Rgt.'Prinz Alfons' 2.Kp. 1897/1900"

I am leaving out umlauts and using the "ss" for the funky German "B" lettering...and I may be mistranslating some "R's".

Along the sides of the images describe above are two vertical lists of soldiers names (I am guessing). The names in order from top to bottom: Left side...Sch Ganslmann..." Grass...." Helmuth... " Kanzier... " Kruetzer... " Lambert... " Lengerl... " Matterer... " Meissner... " Muller... " Niessl... "Ramthaler... " Sommer... " Tillmann... " Ulbrich... " Wasner... Right Side... "Kptm. Luchs...Olt. Katzer...Lt. Michael...Ser. Dirrl...Uffz. Fomm...Gefr. Lehner..."Sch. Aman... " Anger... " Bauer... " Beer... " Burger... " Daxl... " Desch... " Desch... " Engl... " Erver... " Funk"

Looks like the officers are on the right...the rest of the infantry on below and listed on the left.

The handle is off white with metallic gold scroll work. the strap, support, shank, hinge, thumblift and top are all bronze-like.

The Thumblift is a lion with a shield with diagonal lines. On the top of the lid is a Hessian solder with rigle in one hand with the butt on the ground with a lion sitting at his side. The pewter top that the soldier rests on is high-domed with a flora motif scrawled all around it.

The Stein is in near perfect condition...with a little scratch on the number "19" inside the wreath.

That's about all I can see worth mentioning.

I can send images when I get time....

What do you think?

Is it rare since it is customized?

Thanks for any info....
