If you want to clean just the outside, 409 or Scrubbing Bubbles works just fine. Spray it, allow to sit for a while and rinse. I usually do it twice just for good measure. If you are planning to drink from the stein, fill it about 1/3 with chlorine bleach and the remainder with water and let it sit over night. Then wash with soap and water and you should be ready to go.
