Mrbib, Supply and demand certainly play a huge role in stein collecting. But since you identify yourself as a coin collector, I see why you may take Frank's response as a "grump". Coin collectors and stamp collectors are looking for that little item that has been mistakenly added or is missing from a coin or stamp. A rare double-stamped coin or a stamp with an upside down airplane can greatly add to the demand side of the equation for that item. That's not necessarily so in stein collecting. Some makers of old steins seemed to have had no rhyme or reason to identifying marks they did or did not put on their steins. We are sort of used to such things not "always" being there. It doesn't affect the price at all.
