I've had no luck with this one. My old stein of uncertain date says 1/2 L at the top of the rim, and it occurred to me this might help narrow the date for it. But when were liters used as units of measurement? Supposedly the liter was defined in France in 1793 as part of the new metric system, but the term litre was used before that all the way back to Roman times (litra), and of course I have seen many 17th century steins listed as holding liter units. It isn't clear when it became a specific unit of measure, when it was first used in Germany (my stein in German), or when it was first used for beer. Any ideas?
