That's certainly an interesting line of thought. Let me suggest a slightly different one. I am assuming that the capacity mark on your stein is impressed/incised near the rim. If that is indeed the case, then your stein was not made earlier than the second half of the 19th century, after steins began to be mass-produced in factories.
