The information in the article is incorrect. The numbering on the bottom of the stein, 1976/1, indicates, I believe, that this was the first stein produced by Mettlach in the modern era, post-WWII approximately. As stated, it was a limited edition of 3000. I have seen some on eBay that were not fully painted. The 3,000 is probably an approximate run and some may have not made it to the sales floor. As I recall, this stein was originally offered at $200, but generally sells for about 60-65% of that value now.
The SCI convention was held at Mettlach in 1978 and Mettlach made a character stein in the shape of the old Abbey (which was also used for their mark on the bottom of their steins, usually incorrectly referred to as the "castle" mark). The convention stein was in a limited edition of 1,000, but quite a few were broken in transportation back to the states.
I hope this clears up the situation for you.
