As Ron states, the stein you own, marked 1976/1, was not an SCI convention stein, not in 1976 when it was produced, nor in 1978 when SCI held a convention in Mettlach. This stein, as stated by Ron, was the first stein produced by Mettlach in the modern era (so stated by Kirsner in "The Mettlach Book"). Presumably Mettlach used "1976/1" as a form number, incorporating both the year of issue and the fact that this was the first stein issued (that year). SCI had nothing to do with the production or distribution of this stein. You are correct to note that the stein has no capacity mark, but I am not sure how this sits with German law regarding such things.
The other stein which Ron refers to is all white with gold trim painting, in the shape of the Mettlach abbey. That was the 1978 SCI convention stein.
