I started collecting about four years ago and have learned much through SCI and books I've purchased, but those first questions are still fresh in my mind... 1) How many stein manufacturers were (are) there? 2) Which are the most desirable and why? 3) Do they need to have a pewter lid to be a stein? 4) What do those numbers on the bottom mean? 5) What specifically do I look for to identify my stein? 6) How can I tell how old it is 7) What is it's value?

General questions, yes, but these are all a novice would know to ask. Who, What, when, where, why & how.

Right now 'How' is a big one for me, like how is it I have a stein with a documented Diesinger handle but with a Girmscheid capacity mark? I'll take some photo's and post them soon.
