I'm a new collector and was a "first timer" at the SCI convention this year. I asked a number of "old timers" about obtaining reference material that was comprehensive for each manufacturer which would include all the different characteristics used to identify a stein made by that manufacturer. I was told that such a thing didn't exist. Then, I went to Lyn Ayers' seminar on JW Remy. He provided a "handout". It was exactly what I was looking for (29 pages listing the identification marks, capacity marks, handles, inlays, types of relief steins, etched steins, Inlays, etc., with pictured examples of each). It was exactly what I was looking for and has been an immense help in identifying JW Remy steins! I know that SCI is looking for ways to generate revenue to provide funds to run the different aspects of the organization. If SCI were to produce something like this for each manufacturer and charge for the cost plus a profit; I would buy each one of them. And; it would provide us "newbe's" with a manual of all the basics particular to that manufacturer without having to bounce from one article or reference book to another (getting throughly confused in the process).
