This stein was definitely produced by Reinhold Merkelbach. I believe it was originally designed circa 1910-1915, but it was produced over many years. The honey-brown mottled slip-glaze treatment was called "kölnische braun", Cologne brown, since it was inspired by the coloration of earlier stoneware steins from that city.
