John, Sorry, I couldn't get the "reply" function for your reply to my message to work. In addition to the early mark I used the pewter hinge design to date the stein. (You may, in fact, be the John McGregor who wrote the article on using pewter to date steins.) The hinge is very strongly made and so unlikely to be one of the later weaker versions of this hinge design. Does the incised #1 on the base have any significance?
