The value of the stein isn't important, as I said I am giving it to my son-in-law. I was just looking for the "story" of the stein. It would appear from the mark and from the design of the pewter hinge and that the earliest steins were made around 1897, that this is likely one of the first designs they made even if the 1 as the mold mark doesn't positively indicate it is the first. That is all I really needed to know. That it would sell at auction for under $50 is strange to me as cheap moden steins that don't look nearly as good as this one sell for more than that. Regardless, it looks good on the mantle and what it is worth isn't that important. By the way, didn't the company keep examples of the steins they made, particularly the early ones. I would have thought there would be a collection of sorts in the company archives. Obviously a neophyte question.
