Maggie, I'll try to answer your question about the black face with my very elementary German. The brewery was founded in 1632 by Hans Tucher. He apparently was a very religious person. He decided to use his beer's label to honor the leader of a group of Moors (blacks from N. Africa) who was himself martyred for refusing to kill a group of Christians.
