Hi, Kathy. I'm glad you asked about this stein. Collectors generally use the term "contemporary" to refer to all steins made post-World War II, which this one definitely is. We know that from the markings, if nothing else. "Handgemalt" means "hand-painted", and "seit 1862" means "since 1862". Prior to the contemporary period and mass production, ALL steins were handpainted - there was nothing else. The firm of Simon Peter Gerz is a very old one, and they continued in operation until sometime in the 90s when their inventory and their brand name was bought by another company which continues to manufacture steins under that brand. Although most of the statements about this stein which you were given by the owner are relatively harmless, one which is blatantly false is that the stein was painted by "Gerz himself". Even if the stein were 100 years older than it is, it would not have been painted by Simon Peter Gerz, who was a businessman.
