Bill, the stein probably commemerates the Grand Alliance. In 1689, France invaded the German states. England, never missing an opportunity to fight the French, joined on the side of the Germans. Spain, which seemed to have trouble deciding which side to be on over the centuries, opted to fight along side the Germans and English this time. There were other countries involved and it was really more complicated, but that's my irreverant look at history. The outcome led to the rise of German nationalism.
