John S. - they probably don't know, I know collectors who purchased a stein where it was missing the lid and had no idea. The first Navy I bought was missing the screw-off lid, returned it to the seller - they never knew. Going to be interesting if the seller adds your comment - all they have to do is look and you can see where the thread starts.
