This caught my attention on eBay (6244887361) because I haven't seen it before. The stein is a Reinhold Merkelbach 118 E with unusual pewter in that it has the pewter lid, tang, thumblift, and rectangular shank but no strap on the handle. "D.R.P. 54893" is incised into the pewter. Is this a different type method (perhaps patented) of attachment to the handle that never caught on among pewterers?
