There are a number of these porcelain steins which bear the word "Mettlach" on the base. They are clearly modern, cheap and low quality. They were not made by the Mettlach factory of Villeroy & Boch, and it seems likely that they were produced with the intent to deceive. However, most of these offerings are carefully worded to state the facts - "marked Mettlach on the base" - and they leave it to the prospective buyer to misunderstand. Does the seller know that these steins marked "Mettlach" are not what is normally meant by that term? Maybe yes, maybe no, but in either case they don't care. Caveat emptor.
