Walt, I see a character stein as one that maintains the entire exterior shape of what it is trying to represent, like the skull steins. The front 1/3 would qualify as I see it. But if you separate the back 2/3 of the stein, I see nothing at all about that that would qualify in my view. This lid is a very important part in it being labeled a character stein. If it originally came with a flat pewter lid, I'll bet it would be in the 'pottery stein' catagory. Eric
