It is not difficult to drive in Germany, providing you stay in the proper autobahn lane, which is easily determined by how fast you are driving. On two lane roads, you must closely watch your speed going through small towns and construction sites. Gas is expensive, rental cars are very expensive compared to the U.S.and food is moderately priced. Lodging depends greatly on where you stay - two and three star places are reasonably priced but four and five star hotels can be very expensive. If you are driving to Mettlach, I would strongly encourage you to take the long way, up the Mosel River Valley from Koblenz to Trier and from there on to Mettlach. If steins are an interest, I would encourage you to visit the beer stein museum in Bad Schussenried, a small town about 45 minutes south of Ulm. From Frankfurt, figure about three or four hours to get there. Have a nice trip!
