The lady is the Grand Duchess if Hesse, second wife of Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse. Ernst's first wife was Victoria Melita. Ernst and Victoria were first cousins, being decended from Victoria and Albert. When they married, the shoulder cypher for the regiment became a V. After she divorced him for his homosexual preferences, he remarried. (She then married a Romanov first cousin). The cypher went back to what it had been before, an A, I believe, for Ernst's mother. Victoria had been unhappy and unpopular and the new wife's picture in photo or colored form appeared frequently on steins from her regiment.
