Thanks to John for directing our attention to the earlier explanation from Frank. As Frank points out, Steinzeugwerke did not manufacture any steins, they only marketed them for their partner-manufacturers (Merkelbach, Gerz, Hanke and Müller). Steins have been attributed to Steinzeugwerke solely because they appear in a catalog bearing the Steinzeugwerke name. All of these steins were manufactured by one of the partners, all of whom continued to follow their normal marking practices, whatever they were. These companies continued their normal production throughout this period, and there is no known reason for why one of their steins appeared in the Steinzeugwerke catalog and another did not. Because Gerz and Merkelbach very consistently applied their trademark to the base of their steins, few of their works have been confused as Steinzeugwerke. Hanke, on the other hand, did not apply a trademark to the majority of their production, therefore if a Hanke stein appears in the Steinzeugwerke catalog it is readily mis-attributed to Steinzeugwerke.
