Hi, Brian. I think you misunderstood what I was saying about a ribbon, I meant the shape of the handle itself, the glass, not the pewter fittings. Perhaps a better term would be "belt". The image I am trying to conjure up is a glass handle whose cross section is a wide, short rectangle. Handles took on different shapes at different times, today being almost round in cross section. Earlier shapes included a semi-circle (the outside surface rounded, the inside surface flat) and the ribbon shape. The fact that it has a pad at the bottom handle attachment is an indication of an earlier piece of high quality. Based upon the crown and the monogram it seems very likely that this piece was made for a nobleman. It definitely has value, but I am not the best person to evaluate it. If you send me an email at sci at steincollectors dot org I will try to put you in contact with someone who can help further.
