Is this the "Carnival stein, carnival player and drinkers, signed Schlitt"? Does it look like the photo in "The Mettlach Book"? Does it have an inlaid lid? If so, it is very unlikely to be a fake. And it is an absolute steal for $15. Most Mettlach fakes that I have seen have involved forging the marks on the base of an existing stein, not making a stein from scratch. If yours looks like the one in the book, I would venture that it is almost certainly good.
